FOCUS · UPDATED 09/30/2026
Summary
Focus has no user account and no server of its own. What you log (sessions, urges, tasks, notes, streak) is stored only on your iPhone. No analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no selling of data.
What's stored on your iPhone
- Focus sessions (date, minutes, intention, rating).
- The urges you track and their logs (surfed, gave in).
- Tasks, daily notes and settings.
If you delete the app, the data is deleted too. You can export it first from Account → Your data, and delete all of it from there as well.
What leaves your phone
When you add an “Other” urge, type its name and tick “Suggest it for the list” (unticked by default), that text (and the emoji you pick) is sent anonymously to an iCloud database (CloudKit) so the creator can decide which urges to add to the list. It isn't sent with any identifier: not your Apple ID, not your name, not your device. The text is cleaned up (40 characters max) and there's a limit of 5 suggestions a day. If you don't tick the box, it never leaves your phone. (In version 1.0, before this box existed, the name was sent when adding the urge, with the same guarantees.)
Subscription (Focus Pro). Apple processes the payment. Since version 1.0.1, to check whether your subscription is active, Focus uses RevenueCat, which receives the purchase details (product, price, date, country and subscription status) along with an anonymous ID created by the app. It doesn't receive your name, email or Apple ID, or anything you log inside Focus. It's only used to give you access to Pro and to see, in aggregate, how the subscription is doing.
Permissions the app may ask for
- Notifications: local reminders, scheduled by the app on your own phone.
- Face ID: only to protect the Urges tab and discreet mode. Focus never sees your face or stores anything biometric; iOS handles it.
- App blocking (Screen Time): to cover the apps you pick during a session or at night (night block). Focus can't see which apps you use or for how long: iOS hands it your selection as opaque identifiers that only iOS itself can read, and Focus just asks iOS to cover them.
Widgets and Live Activity
They show your minutes, level, streak, your urges and your saved sessions. In discreet mode, urge names are shown in code and saved-session names are hidden. The Live Activity shows the countdown and your intention.
Children
Focus is not directed at children under 13 and doesn't collect personal data from anyone.
